Teacher Training in Deli Serdang: Preparing Teachers for Curriculum Changes

he discussion around curriculum changes in Indonesia has become a hot topic following the new cabinet reshuffle. This became particularly evident when the Minister of Education for Primary and Secondary Schools, Abdul Mu'ti, hinted at changes to the Merdeka Curriculum.

To help teachers prepare for these upcoming curriculum changes, Gugah Nurani Indonesia (GNI) conducted a training session for 25 elementary school teachers in Bulu Cina Village, Deli Serdang District. The training occurred over two days, from November 13-14, 2024.

Deep Learning Approach

The new curriculum is expected to focus on the Deep Learning approach, which emphasizes meaningful learning experiences for students.
Therefore, the training focused on active learning methods to help teachers implement more engaging, meaningful, and enjoyable teaching. GNI aims to ensure that teachers in the region are well-prepared for these changes.

"We want to help teachers become more skilled in conducting active learning that directly engages students, making learning enjoyable and meaningful," said Juliana Nainggolan, Project Officer at GNI.

Juliana explained that the training introduced methods aligned with the principles of Deep Learning, such as the MIKIR method (Experiencing, Interacting, Communicating, and Reflecting). She also mentioned that regardless of the name of the curriculum, active learning methods will remain relevant.

One of the facilitators and a Teacher Trainer for Guru Penggerak (Promoting Teachers), Mr. Pahot Nababan, emphasized that active learning is the core of all curriculums. "This method is the essence of education. Teachers don't need to worry about curriculum changes because the essence remains the same, which is to explore students' potential deeply," he explained.

He also pointed out three key elements in learning: goals, steps, and assessment. "Teachers need to design learning objectives, steps to achieve them, and assessments that help students understand the material actively," he added.

Benefits of Active Learning Training

The benefits of the active learning training were evident, as the participants felt grateful for the opportunity to join. One of them, Mrs. Sugiati, a teacher at SDN 101760 Bulu Cina, shared her experience: "This training has helped me design lessons that make students more excited. Previously, my teaching methods were still monotonous, but now I understand my students' needs better."

Mrs. Krisnawati Handayani, a teacher at SDN 106148 Bulu Cina, echoed similar sentiments. She found the material very practical and appreciated the training. "I now understand better how to design lessons, especially related to the Proyek Penguatan Profil Pelajar Pancasila (P5)," she said.
